WCQ624 The Supreme Court Hears Oral Arguments for Marriage Equality 2015-05-02
Host: Amy Matheny
Amy is discussing the Supreme Court hearing for Marriage Equality. The oral arguments have finally begun. We must wait until June for the ruling. Next show, Windy City Times is turning 30!
Guest: Midwest Regional Director of Lambda Legal Jim Bennett joins Amy on the Queercast to discuss the oral arguments. The main questions the court is asking are #1 "Is a state constitutionally obligated to marry same sex couples?" and #2 "Are states obligated to recognize another state?" Jim explains the history of federal courts overturning state bans after the Edie Windsor case and whether the Supreme Court was ready to hear these arguments. He also discusses the Plaintiffs, the lawyers arguing the cases, and the justices and which direction they seem to be leaning.
